On Sunday, two Chinese tourists stood in front of the Reichstag building in Germany and made a Nazi salute. They were promptly arrested; such Nazi symbolism is illegal in the country. According to the government, “A probe on suspicion of using the symbols of anti-constitutional organisations was opened against the two Chinese men, aged 36 and 49.” After paying $58 fines, they were released.
But that wasn’t enough for alleged comedienne Chelsea Handler, who promptly engaged in ideological fascism that far surpassed those would-be Chinese Adolfs:
That wouldn’t be nice. That would be destruction of the First Amendment. And it’s one of the reasons the Right fears that the Left hopes to pass hate speech bills that would criminalize all expression they find objectionable. After all, who’s to tell what language is so racist it deserves jail time?
Say, for example, a comedian were to joke about the ethnicities of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s two adopted children. Would that be cause for prosecution?
It’s rather rare that fascism comes in the form of jackboots. First it comes with happy smiles and promises to wipe out only those views we all find objectionable. Or at least the face of a drunken comedienne policing speech on behalf of the government.
