In an interview with ABC's This Week on Sunday, President Barack Obama admitted that he allowed himself to get out of touch with the American people as president, and that being caught in "the bubble" was part of the reason he did not actually believe Donald Trump could win.
Though Obama has referenced running for a third term in the past, predicting he could win the presidency again, he told Stephanopoulos that he's now all for term limits on presidents. The two reasons he provided for limiting presidential terms is the extreme demands of the job and because it requires the president to live in "the bubble," which inevitably disconnects him from the people.
"[T]he bubble is the bubble," he told Stephanopoulos. "And, I think we’ve done a pretty good job staying in touch with the American people. But at a certain point you can’t help but lose some feel for what’s on the ground because you’re not on the ground."
The host then asked the president if "the bubble" was the reason he didn't understand how much Trump's message was resonating with so many Americans, saying, "You didn’t think Donald Trump could win."
Obama conceded, stating, "Case in point. So that tells me there’s a utility in the democracy refreshing itself on an ongoing basis."
Despite the occasional displays of humility, the president spent most of the interview patting himself and his administration on the back for doing what he repeatedly deemed a "pretty good job." Watch:
In December, Obama boasted that he was "confident" that he could have beaten Trump if he'd run for a third term.
"I'm confident that if I — if I had run again and articulated it, I think I could’ve mobilized a majority of the American people to rally behind it," he told his former political operative David Axelrod. "I know that in conversations that I’ve had with people around the country, even some people who disagreed with me, they would say the vision, the direction that you point towards is the right one."
Trump slammed the self-admitted "out of touch" Obama's claim, tweeting, "President Obama said that he thinks he would have won against me. He should say that but I say NO WAY! - jobs leaving, ISIS, OCare, etc."
